Our humans have strong opinions about lunch. We have strong opinions about being invited. These are the pubs, restaurants and cafés we’ve visited around Reading and the wider Berkshire area, including Pangbourne, Sonning and Streatley.
Our humans write the reviews; we supply the dachshund perspective. Choose a place below to read our full story without leaving this page.
For a meal worth planning around
The Shurlock Inn has our Gold Bowl. Café Yolk and Artichoke Café offer two different café stops: our humans especially remember the breakfast and brunch dishes. Each review explains what worked for us on the visit.
Check the indoor arrangement
Dog friendly can mean the whole venue or selected tables. Café Yolk has limited indoor dog tables and can feel snug. The Shinfield Arms welcomes dogs around the bar rather than in its main restaurant room. Tell the venue about your dog when booking.
Parking is part of the plan
The Cunning Man has on-site parking and asks visitors to register their vehicle. Café Yolk and Artichoke Café have nearby parking rather than their own car parks. Check each review before setting off.

We’ve inspected The Shurlock Inn several times now. Returning is essential when the meat smells this good. Someone must keep an eye on the different cuts coming out of the kitchen, and our noses are exceptionally qualified.
We’ve always received a lovely welcome, with water bowls, cuddles and occasionally treats. During our visits, we’ve been welcome inside and out, keeping our humans under proper dinner supervision.
The garden and terrace feel calm and peaceful, especially lovely on a spring or summer evening. It’s an excellent arrangement for dinner with dogs: our humans can relax outside while we keep our noses occupied with whatever’s coming out of the kitchen.
Our humans say the meat is amazing, with a choice of cuts that makes this a particularly exciting destination for anyone with a dachshund’s nose. We’ve conducted extensive sniffing research and find their enthusiasm entirely understandable.
Gold Bowl: worth a special trip for excellent food and a welcome that keeps us coming back. Our humans make the bookings. We bring the noses.

We’ve visited Café Yolk several times, and our humans’ enthusiasm for breakfast shows no sign of fading. Bacon and maple syrup French toast, pancakes… apparently choosing is quite difficult. We could help, but nobody hands us a menu.
The welcome was friendly, with dogs allowed at selected indoor tables. Those tables sit quite close together, so settling down takes a little manoeuvring. Our compact dimensions proved useful, although larger canine colleagues might find things less comfortable.
There’s also an outside seating area. No dog refreshments were provided during our visits, so our humans should come prepared for our requirements as well as their own pancake ambitions.
Our humans described the food as exceptional, with plenty of excellent breakfast and brunch choices, excellent service and fair value. The atmosphere was lively but comfortable, especially busy at weekends. There are no bookings and often a queue outside, so bring a little patience alongside your appetite.
Silver Bowl: worth a detour for humans who take brunch seriously—and dogs willing to supervise from a snug spot.

We’ve visited Artichoke Café several times, where dogs are welcome throughout indoors. A pleasing arrangement: our humans can choose their table without first checking whether we’re authorised to supervise breakfast.
The staff were lovely and friendly, and the café had a cheerful mix of families, children and fellow dogs. There aren’t many indoor tables, but we haven’t generally had to wait. We had enough room to settle, with a lively but comfortable atmosphere around us.
Our humans were particularly enthusiastic about the quality of the food. The Mexican eggs Benedict earned a special mention, although we weren’t invited to conduct an independent tasting. Apparently our contribution is to sit nicely and look interested. We excel at the second part.
Service was good, and our humans thought the experience fairly priced. There’s also an outside seating area. No dog refreshments were provided during our visits, so bring our essentials alongside your breakfast appetite.
Silver Bowl: worth a detour for excellent human food and a friendly café where paws are welcome.

A large pub where dogs were welcome throughout indoors. Excellent: we could accompany our humans without negotiating which room recognised our credentials. The welcome was friendly, with enough space for us to settle while keeping dinner under observation.
Outside, there’s a generous garden with picnic tables for humans enjoying a drink, plus a courtyard with covered seating that can be opened up when the weather cooperates. Plenty of options for a little fresh-air supervision.
Water bowls can be topped up from a nearby water barrel. A sensible arrangement, provided your humans remember that refreshments aren’t exclusively their department.
Our humans found the food fairly priced, with a special mention for the skewers. Apparently they’re worth trying—we can confirm they attracted human enthusiasm. The Sunday roast also went down well, although Sundays can get busy. Service was a little mixed, but the lively atmosphere remained comfortable during our visits.
Bronze Bowl: somewhere we’d happily bring our humans again when nearby.

We’ve accompanied our humans to this traditional, low-ceilinged pub several times. Being closer to the floor, we find ceiling height less pressing than where we’re allowed to settle.

We’ve accompanied our humans to this traditional, low-ceilinged pub several times. Being closer to the floor, we find ceiling height less pressing than where we’re allowed to settle.
Dogs are welcome around the bar, but the main restaurant room is reserved for humans. The welcome was friendly, although the limited dog-friendly tables can make settling down a little awkward. We recommend our humans mention us when booking. We dislike administrative surprises.
Outside, there’s a good-sized, partially covered terrace at the back, plus pavement seating—useful alternatives when the indoor arrangements feel a little snug. Water is available on request, so do remind your humans to order something for everyone.
Our humans found the food fine and fairly priced, with service that could be a little mixed. The atmosphere was lively but comfortable: somewhere we’d happily consider when nearby, rather than redirect an entire adventure.

A cosy, traditional country pub where dogs were welcome throughout indoors. We approve of being included in the seating arrangements without our humans having to negotiate on our behalf.
The staff were friendly, and we met the owner, who was clearly enthusiastic about having dogs around. Water and treats were offered—an excellent way to bring the conversation down to dachshund level.
There was plenty of comfortable space to settle, with a calm, relaxed atmosphere. Outside seating was available too, although there are steps to bear in mind for little legs and anyone needing easier access.
Our humans particularly enjoyed the steak frites: apparently very tasty, with a portion large enough to deserve its own inspection team. We volunteered our noses. Service was good, and our humans felt the meal was fairly priced.
Silver Bowl: a comfortable country-pub stop with good human food and a welcome that includes refreshments for paws.

Our humans chose an outside table to enjoy the nice weather, although dogs were welcome throughout indoors too. We received a friendly welcome and had plenty of room to settle into our usual role: watching lunch happen to somebody else.
There’s outside seating, but no garden for additional sniffing duties. Water is available on request, so remind your humans that their drinks order should include the short-legged members of the party.

We’ve visited several times with our humans, and the riverside setting makes a lovely backdrop to lunch. There are beautiful walks nearby too, so we recommend combining their eating plans with our sniffing schedule.
Inside, dogs are welcome at selected tables. Some are high tables, which puts dinner even further from dachshund inspection height. Space can feel a little snug, so it’s worth mentioning your canine companions when booking.
The welcome was friendly and the atmosphere calm and relaxed. Water is available on request, and there’s outside seating plus access to the garden within The Swan’s grounds—a welcome opportunity to stretch our little legs.

Our humans brought us to Coppa Club in Sonning, where the riverside setting gives everyone something lovely to look at between courses. There’s a garden right by the river too—an excellent addition for guests whose interests extend beyond the menu.
Dogs were welcome in selected indoor areas, with friendly staff, water bowls offered and enough room for us to settle. The atmosphere felt calm and relaxed, which suited our important work of keeping the humans company.
Outside, there’s a covered seating area that can be used during winter, plus some rather eye-catching igloos. We haven’t inspected their dog arrangements, so our humans should check before booking one.
Our humans found the food very good, in keeping with their other Coppa visits. Service was good, and they felt the meal was fairly priced. A lovely setting for lunch with paws along for the occasion.
Silver Bowl: worth a detour for good food, a friendly welcome and time beside the river.

Our humans took us to The Little Angel, where dogs were welcome throughout indoors. Friendly staff offered water, and there was plenty of comfortable space for us to settle. A calm, relaxed setting for keeping lunch under quiet observation.
The outside seating was lovely too, with the cricket field next door providing entertainment when a game is underway. Humans watching a ball they aren’t allowed to chase—we find their hobbies fascinating.
Our humans particularly enjoyed the bobotie and South African Scotch egg. We contributed attentive noses while they handled the tasting. The food was very good, service was good, and they felt the meal was fairly priced.
Silver Bowl: a comfortable stop with friendly staff, lovely food and a little cricket-side atmosphere when play is underway.
